The Fruitmarket Gallery is a contemporary art gallery in Edinburgh, Scotland. It is located in the centre of the city on Market Street, beside Edinburgh Waverley train station. The gallery, which opened in 1974, is located in a building which was originally built as a fruit and vegetable market in 1938. In 1994, the building was renovated by Richard Murphy Architects to assume its current form. It has a café which is well used and a bookshop which stocks art, architecture, design and photography books and magazines, along with a range of books for children. Recent exhibitions have included international artists such as Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Cai Guo-Qiang, Alex Hartley and Roman Signer. Scottish contemporary artists are also well represented in the exhibit programme by the likes of Callum Innes, Christine Borland, Nathan Coley, Louise Hopkins and Lucy Skaer.
